Rome

February 2018

Rome, one of my favorite cities around the world, is not just one of the most  beautiful cities in the world,  but also all year long the streets of Rome are full of people, sweeping Italian language are  sound to  your ears, between one “Piazza”to another “Piazza” you will see a city full of culture, art, impressive buildings, nightlife, and of course great food.

Transportation from Fiumicino airport to Rome (FCO)

Getting from Fiumicino Airport to the city is simple and there are several options:  Taxi – an expensive option, taxi from the airport to the city will take about 40 minutes and will cost between 40-50 euros.

Train – good option, a train ride takes about half an hour to the main train station of  Rome – Termini, the train price is fixed and the price is about 14 euros.
Bus – this option is less recommended because of the long duration.

The best option to get to Rome from the airport is with private shuttle services
Most of the fare is like the price of the train and therefore it is worthwhile, the service is to your hotel door – so this is the best and most convenient option.
For details on this option – you are welcome to write me a message and I will send you the details of the driver-who goes by the name Max, who gave me excellent service.

 Things to do :

Trastevere neighborhood- this is the neighborhood that I stayed during my trip in  Rome, Trastevere is one of the most special neighborhoods in Rome, on the western side of the Tiber River.
the great thing about this neighborhood is that Trastevere has a great nightlife, good restaurants and good bars, a small neighborhood in Rome that provides a good response to all the city’s main attractions, so if you are looking for a cheap hotel in Rome, I would definitely recommend this area.

I stayed in a guest house that named Imperial 78 which is located on the main street  of the neighborhood, a charming little place, Dexter – a very nice guy that manages the
place will welcome you with a big smile and will take care of you, highly recommend

Fontana dell’acqua paola – a really nice fountain that deserves to get more respect , this fountain is located in a small street in Rome and not many people come to see this fountain.
next to the fountain, there is a large terrace with an amazing view over the city.

My recommendation is to visit it on the way to the Vatican. this fountain is located in the eastern side of the river like the Vatican, Trastevere, St. Angel’s Castle and more.

The Vatican, Vatican Museum– the smallest country in the world, a tiny country, lying quietly in Rome and one of the most important sites in Rome. in the Vatican Museum you will see works by the world’s greatest artists like  Bernini, Michelangelo and more.
This museum is a must to everyone not just for art lovers.
while you enter the Vatican City you will meet the well-known tourist “hunters” who will offer you “skip the line” a nice but expensive option, which will cost over € 30 per person.  My recommendation is to enter to the museum independently. pay attention and prepare yourself that the lines at the entrance to the Vatican and the Vatican Museum are very long but definitely worth it.

In the Vatican Museum you will walk through the corridors filled with art and magnificent  works, sculpted from different periods, wall illustrations, including the famous work of  Michelangelo “The creation of Adam”, I can not describe the beauty of this museum,  colorfulness, precision, different periods and all are pleased to the eyes.  note that the discount for students at the Vatican Museum is a significant discount.
Pay attention if you prebook in their website its like skip the line option.

Castle of Sant Angelo- inside the Vatican, there is a castle that was built in the second century, the castle was once used as a burial place, and over the years it has also become a prison.
Today the castle serves as a museum.  a really nice attraction for kids.
in my opinion, it is not necessary to enter this site but its must to watch from the outside among the castle there is a lot of stalls and it is a really nice place.
This site is on the western side of the Tiber River (St. Angel Bridge).

The Colosseum – the well-known attraction of Rome –everyone comes to the Colosseum,  this magnificent Colosseum, which we all love, was used as an amphitheater and even to executed.
It is recommended to visit outside the Colosseum not only in daylight, also at night to see this amazing structure by light.
I recommend visiting the Colosseum together with the Roman Forum – a combined ticket will cost you only 12 Euros.

The Roman Forum –you will find there ruins of the largest center of the Roman Empire,  this is a spectacular site, walking between huge buildings, the courts of the Roman Empire,  the streets and buildings where the Roman Empire were gathered.  highly recommended!  a combined ticket for this site and to the Colosseum will cost you only 12 Euros.

Arch of Titus- the Arc de Triomphe of the Roman Empire on the Kingdom of Israel in 70 BC,  located in the Roman forum.

Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele – It is hard to believe that this is only a monument, located in Piazza Venezia , this is a monument in honor of the first king of Italy –  Respect.

At the center of the monument you will find none other than the statue of the first king of  Italy riding on a horse.  climb up the stairs and enter the building, the interior is spectacular and you will find artworks scattered among the staircases.

I recommended going up the stairs toward the balconies overlooking all sides of the city from several sides of the building, I recommend visiting the top terrace of the monument even in the dark to see Rome buildings by light – note that the building closes every day at 7 pm.

The Pantheon – the house of all the gods, an impressive structure from ancient times , was first built more than 1800 years ago, served as a temple to a number of gods.
The Pantheon is built in a circular shape with a dome with a hole in the ceiling, this hole lets  the light  to enter  the building- this hole is shaped like the sun, and represents the Solar deity, note that there is no light entering from different directions.

Piazza Navona – the most famous square in Rome, this square covered with cultural arts,  history, and great cafes places.
The square was built by none other than the great Bernini, at its center you will find the  “Four Rivers” fountain, which tells the stories of classical mythology.
One is the Nile River, the other the Danube River, the Ganges and the Rio de la Plata River try to find out which statue belongs to which river.

This site is located in the eastern side of the Tiber River.

Fontana di trevi – the famous fountain of Rome, and again one of the great sculptors of  Bernini, in the center you will find a statue of the sea god according to classical mythology –  Neptune.
It is customary to throw a coin into the fountain to “ensure” your return to Rome again.  .This site is located in the eastern side of the Tiber River

The Spanish Steps – located above Piazza di Spagna, without a doubt this is a beautiful place, with plenty of cafes and great restaurants around. in Piazza di Spagna you will see a fountain that is shaped like a ship (Bernini),the ship symbolizes a ship that was washed up in the Tiber River and reached this point, and was therefore built as a memorial to the exceptional case.

Piazza del Popolo – one of the most interesting squares in Rome
This square is at the end of the famous shopping street Via del corso, that square is under one of the most interesting places in Rome-Villa Borghese Gardens. around the square you will find excellent restaurants including Nineteen restaurant that I recommend -excellent food in fix prices.

This site is located in the eastern side of the Tiber River.

Vila Borghese garden – one of my favorite places in Rome, up the stairs from Piazza del  Popello, you will find many gardens and museums spread throughout the park, including the  Borghese Museum.
There is a big terrace above Piazza del popolo from the gardens that provides a great lookout over the city .
There are several nice cafes in the park.

This site is located in the eastern side of the Tiber River.

Borghese gallery – a museum in the gardens of Villa Borghese, one of the special museums in Rome, a must for art lovers. the museum includes works by great sculptors such as  Bernini, Raphael Kanova and others.
It is recommended to pre-book the tickets(22€).

Shopping in Rome

For shopping lovers -Via del corso – this boulevard includes all the big brands.
Market in Rome – Campo de fiori a colorful market of fruits, vegetables, textiles and more.  .The market is right near Piazza Navona

Transportation in Rome

The city is well-connected with transportation, the price of one trip costs 1.5 euro and there are several options to buy tickets which are good for a few days.  you can buy tickets at some kiosks-Tabco shops (with the T letter).
In my opinion there is no need for people who are in good shape to travel by public transport, by foot is the best way to discover the city and to walk in nice alleys and reach nice spots.

Thank you from reading, Have fun 🙂
